How to Set Up Google Analytics 4: A Step-by-Step Beginner’s Guide 

If you haven’t already made the switch to Google Analytics 4, now is the time. Setting up GA4 is crucial for accurate tracking and long-term insights. Here’s a simple step-by-step guide to get started. 

 

Step 1: Create a GA4 Property 

  • Go to Admin → “+ Create Property” 
  • Choose GA4 and input your business name, industry, time zone 

Step 2: Install Global Site Tag (gtag.js) 

  • Add the script to your website’s <head> 
  • Or install via Google Tag Manager 

Step 3: Set Up Data Streams 

  • Choose Web, iOS, or Android 
  • For websites, enter the URL and stream name 
  • GA4 auto-tracks scrolls, outbound clicks, video views, etc. 

Step 4: Configure Events & Conversions 

  • Events like form_submit, add_to_cart are auto-detected or can be manually created 
  • Mark important ones as conversions in the “Events” tab 

Step 5: Link to Google Ads and BigQuery (Optional) 

  • Go to Admin → Product Links 
  • Helps sync ad performance with site behavior and exports raw data 

Step 6: Test with DebugView 

  • Use GA4’s DebugView to ensure events are firing in real-time
