CoinGecko vs CoinMarketCap Ads – Which Performed Better for Our Crypto Campaign?
In the world of cryptocurrency marketing, CoinGecko and CoinMarketCap (CMC) are two of the most dominant platforms. Both serve as go-to resources for investors looking to track token prices, market caps, and ecosystem insights. Naturally, they’ve also evolved into premium ad platforms for crypto brands.
We recently executed ad campaigns on both platforms and collected performance data to help understand where crypto ads perform better in terms of engagement and cost-efficiency. Here’s what we found:
🚀 Campaign Setup Overview
| Metric | CoinMarketCap | CoinGecko |
|---|---|---|
| Total Impressions | ~172,398 | 40,960 |
| Total Clicks | 33 | 52 |
| Total Spend | $999.88 | $328 |
| Average CTR | 0.019% | 0.13% |
| CPM | ~$5.80 | $8 (fixed) |
| CPC (approx) | ~$30.30 | ~$6.31 |
📉 Performance Summary
✅ Click-Through Rate (CTR)
CoinGecko clearly outperformed CoinMarketCap in CTR:
· CoinGecko: 0.13%
· CoinMarketCap: 0.019%
The higher CTR suggests that CoinGecko’s audience engaged more actively with our creatives. This could be influenced by several factors like placement, banner size, or the platform’s UX structure that gives better visibility to ads.
✅ Cost per Click (CPC)
· CoinGecko: ~$6.31 per click
· CoinMarketCap: ~$30.30 per click
Despite a higher CPM on CoinGecko, the lower CPC highlights better cost efficiency. CoinMarketCap’s higher CPC might be attributed to lower engagement or suboptimal creative-to-audience fit.
✅ Banner Performance
· On CoinGecko, the 320×50 banners (especially Banner 2) performed best, with CTRs as high as 0.14%.
· On CoinMarketCap, creatives generally saw poor engagement regardless of impressions — pointing toward creative-message mismatch or weaker ad visibility.
🔍 Key Learnings
1. Creative Impact In both platforms, Banner 2 on CoinGecko outperformed all others — highlighting the importance of compelling design and messaging.
2. Platform Audience Behavior CoinGecko seems to attract a more engaged, action-oriented audience. CMC, although much larger in traffic volume, may need stronger offers or more visible placements to convert effectively.
3. Ad Placement and Format The size and placement of the banners played a critical role. Mobile-focused banners (320×50) delivered the best CTRs on CoinGecko, supporting a mobile-first targeting strategy.
4. Geo and Targeting Flexibility Both platforms offered limited geographic targeting. However, CoinMarketCap supports multiple banner types and campaign formats including floating buttons and promoted coins, which could be explored in future iterations.
🧠 Final Verdict
Platform Best For Verdict
CoinGecko High CTR, cost-effective clicks ✅ Better for traffic & testing
CMC Large-scale exposure ⚠️ Needs better creative/offers
If your goal is performance-based marketing (clicks, conversions), CoinGecko currently offers better returns for crypto projects, especially with optimized creatives.
If brand visibility at scale is the objective, CoinMarketCap still offers unparalleled reach — but needs stronger messaging or deeper budget to convert effectively.
